Working with electronics, precautions to take?

Hello everyone.

I'm looking to fix 1 of my 12V outlets in the car, I htink 1 of the wires broke or burned. I know enough about electronics to work with it myself and definitely not willing to pay a mechanic 100$ to simply fix a couple of wires to an outlet I don't even use just want fixed.

Anyways, I have 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS

would like to know what precautions I should take before working with the car electronics?

I've read about disconnecting the negative terminal from battery but I can't remember if you should place it to touch the car body or to NOT touch the car body?
If anyone could verify that 1 for me.

Any other tips are highly appreciated.

Thank you
