bfeeney 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) I found this in the new Road & Track magazine today. "There was a time, not so long ago, when the name Mazda was synonymous with the rotary engine. However, these days, what with lackluster sales of the RX-8 and the success of the Mazda3, not to mention the continued popularity of the MX-5 Miata, the Japanese company from Hiroshima is better known for its efficient piston powerplants than its Wankel." "Despite reports that the RX-8 will be the last car to have a rotary engine, we at R&T have received information directly from Japanese Mazda execs that the death of the rotary has been greatly exaggerated, and that the company is planning to introduce a new rotary-powered car in the near future. Apparently, there’s a team of engineers currently working on a drastically improved version of the Renesis 2-rotor dubbed the 16X (displayed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show). Mazda U.S. had no comment on the subject." "Now that we’ve determined that the rotary will be back, the question is, what will it power? We asked our source, who wanted to remain anonymous, and he replied: “That hasn’t exactly been decided yet, but we’re seriously thinking of building a new RX-7, one that brings back the spirit of the original. Therefore, if we do indeed bring the RX-7 back, it will most likely be lightweight and more affordable than the last model, the FD.” The future car’s styling will borrow heavily from the Furai concept and the Kabura show car, while the chassis will be based on that of the current MX-5." Elite_Deforce 1 Report post Posted April 6, 2010 First of all, this is old news. Second of all, why would they make an RX-7? That doesn't work.

2007DBR9 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2010 Everyone knows wankels= fail. I think it could be quite good if they make it more affordable. The RX8 is a rip off. Don't know if I am keen on the styling of the Furai concept, they should keep it simple like the original. +1 on calling it RX7 being stupid. Wouldn't RX9 make more sense? I quite like the Furai, I like its sweeping style. But the downside to the Furai is that the chassis want built by Mazda, it was built by LOLA and is the same used on the Aston Martin LMP1's

All Mazdas are way over priced. The only I could see myself driving is an RX8, and I wouldn't be paying for it.

I don't know, look at the GTO that took a long break and still held the GTO name. Maybe they would call it the RX-7 with the hopes that people will buy it since the RX-8 sucks. Did it sell well?
