Rods and Hogs: Classic Car Show & Charity Event for Cancer

9 June 2007

We all know that most people, even non car buffs, like classic cars. They always seem to have a warm feel and timeless look that attracts us. Maybe it’s the throaty roar of their engines or just a nice reminder of the past, but classic cars are truly fun to be around.

This weekend in Orange County California there was a perfect excuse to take a look at some of these beauties while also raising awareness for something more human that touches many families each year — cancer. Each year over 1.4 million people in the United States alone are diagnosed with cancer and this event was a reminder of how it can touch everyone regardless of race, age, or gender. Most of us are aware of the major types of cancer like lung, bone, and skin, but there are many more that affect people each year that don’t receive the same publicity. The Rods and Hogs charity event this year was organized to highlight an often overlooked but serious type of cancer for women, ovarian cancer, which affects more than 23 thousand new women each year.

If you have ever been to a charity event like this you will know one thing — everyone is there to have fun and relax. Many know or have someone in their family who has been affected by cancer and they are there to celebrate the good times in life. This weekend certainly was no different.

The “Rods and Hogs” event started at a large lot in Orange County with probably a hundred or more roaring classic cars and choppers (or hogs as they called them). Each owner got a chance to show off their classic car or hog.

With so many classic cars in one place I spotted owners taking the chance to swap tips and ideas to take home for use in their own projects. This was pretty fun to see and interesting to listen to. Just being around these owners I learned a few new things to add to my bag of tricks.

After about an hour of chatting and car gazing everyone started getting ready for some real action. The car show was going on the road! The plan was for a hundred classic cars and hogs to rumble out of the lot and go on a roughly a three hour tour across Orange County, stopping briefly at several landmark “pit stops”. As a twist, these stops themselves were turned into a fun game of poker, where at each of the five stops you got a card and at the finish line there were prizes for those with the best hand. Great idea and kudos to the organizers!

As this Classic Car Show took the road and wound its way to the finish I was reminded of the many classic cars I have seen in the past and how I only saw them sitting on a show floor — not in action.

Today I really got the chance to feel back in time and appreciate what classic cars are about and why they will always have a place in our hearts.

A special thank you to Skip Pedigo and the entire OCOCA team for this great event. If you have any questions about Ovarian Cancer please visit ovarianoc.org or for questions on cancer in general cancer.gov.
