Hi,

Just bought myself Audi A6 Avant - 2005 - 2.7L SE TDI - 98K Miles Manual 6 speed.

On a few occasions recently, and in low gear, the gear selected has jumped into neutral. Does this mean i will have to consider having a new gearbox fitted !!!
Please assist
Thanks

Bill

You either have worn engine/transmission mounts or worn bearings in the trans. Checking for worn mounts is easy, even at a shop. Worn bearings however, can mean a new trans or at least a rebuild of the unit you have. Some people will say it's the synchros, but the fact is, the syncros have nothing to do with keeping a transmission in gear. They only assist in sliding from one gear to the next.

I'd also your Gearbox oil level, if you haven't already. I can see this thread is a few weeks old however.

If the first gear has some teeth that are chewed up, then it will cause this to happen. Ckeck your motor and transmission mounts to make sure excess movement is not pulling the car out of gear. Also check all the shift linkage bushing.
