Hi,
Got a 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic. I'm getting a squeal from my right front wheel. Now I have two questions; 1. I'm pretty sure it's the bearings, but could it be anything else. It doesn't start making noise until I drive about 10minutes. It also stops
making any noise off and on while driving.
2. If it is the bearing, is it the whole hub that needs replacing or are they seperate bearings (inner and outer which are easier to replace).

Probably it may be clunk noise. The clunk noise may appear to be directly in front wheel of the car. Hitting a bump while turning can produce the clunk noise. Sometimes the noise may be duplicated when the vehicle is sitting still and the steering wheel is turned 90 degrees in either direction before initially centering the steering wheel.
The clunk noise may be caused by a slip/stick condition between the inner and outer components of the intermediate shaft. If the source of the noise is identified from the black tube it must be replaced.

I jacked it up this morning and checked my wheel play. (12 and 6 o'clock) Pretty tight, which means bearings usually aren't totally shot. (By the way checked it out the bearings, inner and outer are the type that are built into one piece, that's how long it's been since I did bearings, lol)
Anyway it doesn't have much play but still doesnt sound healthy when I turn wheel by hand. Probably not at point where. I have to worry about wheel breaking off, but still, it will get there. The sound is right in middle of rotor where it should be, and sounds the worst when I turn the wheel by hand then stop fast! Turning it reverse and stopping sounds even worse! ( But like I said no play AT ALL with my hands at top and bottom.) Side to side also, so tie rods are fine!
I cannot think of anything else it could be! Although I did brakes about 3 months ago, so I will check around calipers for anything unusual, loose or broke and causing noise. Might as well before I spend $80 or$90 bucks on cheap bearing!
