is it possible & obvious to tell if a scratch or dent is 9 months old compared to 1 month old?

I think it is. The main point is, if the dent is new, its clearly visible, while an old dent may not be visible from a distance because somewhere it start matching with the original color of the vehicle.
But still, sometimes an old scratch looks worse than a new one.

Scratches can rust if they are old enough and if conditions permit. Otherwise it will look exactly the same in 10-20-30 years. I know from experience. (Don't let your mother drive your RX-7, ever)

Lol thanks, I notice some hail damaged auctions going lately, and was wondering if i could benefit from learning if the hail was recent or not and if it mattered.
