Toyota have announced a new addition to their range - the GT 86. First impressions are that is is a proper back to basics drivers car.

2.0 NA engine producing 200 bhp, 0-60 in 7 seconds, rear wheel drive, manual gearbox, and £25k.

I can't wait to have a go in one, it is great to see a proper, cheap, basic drivers car from a mainstream manufacturer.

Road tests are starting to emerge, and they all seem to be very favourable.

That's the pic of the first concept. it looks nothing like that.

Here in the US, it'll be sold by both Scion (toyota's cheap car distribution network) and by Subaru, as teh Subaru BRZ. The scion willbe a stripper model without all the amenities, but with the typcial Scion endless customization list. the Subie will be more expensive and slightly upscale in equipment, though the two cars LOOK virtually identical.

In the UK, the pricing will be mid 20k pounds, while we get it here in the low $20k range.

I'm seriously considering looking into the Scion version when we get them here in the US next spring.

Ah crap - used the wrong image! Had one of the production model, but the img tags aren't happy just now.

Have you seen the optional rear wing that is going on?

Here is some more information

yeah, I saw that wing. It's basically the same as their race car wing and there for homologation purposes:

I'd want one just like this:

or in the Subaru blue.

I have to say, it does look very good in white. Reminds me of the Integra Type R for some reason!

I am normally a fan of black cars, but I think Sonic blue would be very nice on one of these.

On a side note - have you heard that the chief engineer at Toyota is wanting to bring back the Supra and the MR2 to join the GT 86?

I'll wait till the numbers of the turbo version are out. 150 ft lb of torque doesn't sound that fun.

btw, FT-86*

But the car doesn't weight very much, 0-60 in 7 seconds is pretty quick. I think they have made it powerful enough and light enough to be great fun!

FT-86? The article I posted says GT-86?

Might be different stateside.

the original GTi had less torque, and the RX8 had about the same torque, the early RX7s had less torque, and the Miata has less torque. In light cars with good gearing (remember, gearing multiplied torque) you dnt NEED that much to have fun. besides, what this car is supposed to be is about BALANCE, not outright power. We're getting too used to seeing heavier cars with more power. Lighter cars simply ned less to be fun.

Oh, and we won't get the Toyota version here, so only the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S.

Since the days of just banging a coupé on the back of the production schedule for a nondescript repmobile have long gone, we meet each new sporting coupé with a degree of disbelief. How have they done it? How will it make money?

Coupés are notorious money pits, selling well in the first couple of years, then as fashion moves on, becoming forlorn cash burners, ending their short lives unloved and discounted at the back of the showroom.

Of course, everyone likes to recall Ford's remarkable Capri, a coupé with staying power, which became a sort of blue-collar supercar over its 17-year life, but for every one of those Bodie-and-Doyle machines, there's a much small number of Volkswagen Corrado, or Nissan 200SX models; long gone, but not-quite forgotten.

So where once Toyota produced a handful of sporting coupés including the Celica, Supra and the mid-engined MR2, its sporting pretentious are strictly pipe and slippers these days. Until now. From next June about £25,000 will get you behind the wheel of this, the Toyota GT 86, also known in Japan as the "Hachiroku", which translates as "eight, six" in Japanese. It's the long awaited product of a cooperation between Subaru and Toyota and uses Toyota's design and technical expertise, with Subaru's hardware and spare manufacturing capacity – the Subaru version will be called the BRZ.

Anyone know the price range on either one. (Toyota) Scion or Subaru. I hope its the low 20's cause if higher I will wait for the 2013-2014 WRX

if it's 25,000

British Pounds then that puts it at $39,557 for us which puts it over a WRX STI Limited. lol

You can't compare the pricing in the UK straight across like that, as cars cost more there than here. In the UK, the WRX STi Limited will cost more than 25k pounds sterling, too.

Looks right now that the Scion will base at $23-25k and the Subie will be $25-27k, due to higher standard content. The Subie will also have a bit softer suspension and a bit more understeer.

I thought the Subaru was supposed to be the lower-level version?

The comparison was more for comic relief, hence the lol

But I figure the low 20's seems about right. And yes I want one with the Castrol Livery
