Hey all!
i'm a twenty year old uni student living in Adelaide, South Australia.
I have been saving up for a car and now have $4,000 in the bank for my first car!
but i really don't have any idea what would best be good for me as i'm probably the least automobile savvy in my group of friends.
my 'criteria' as so to speak for a car is:

* not too small
* not too big
* big enough to fit a drum kit in
* highly economical and low maintenance
* model late 90's onwards

and between 3k - 4k

any help would be great :)

I have no idea what car prices etc are like down there, but I seem to remember we have an Australian member on here who may appear.

How does insurance work down there? It may cost a lot more than you were expecting.

If it is your first car, I would suggest something cheap that has been looked after and has a good history. Probably not worth going all out on your first car, save up for a year or 2 until you can afford (and insure) something a bit more interesting.

Try to get a manual car if you can, it is very useful knowing how to drive one.

We have different likes in cars and I really couldn't give you exactly the car you've been looking but a used Kia Cerato is my choice!

I agree Kia aren't exactly a premium brand, but with decent Warranties and service plans on their new cars, they're arguably more of a sensible buy than say a Ford or Vauxhall (Holden to our friends down-under)

In all fairness, the newer ones do make sense to those who only use a car to get from A to B. A 7 year warranty, cheap list price, and competitive finance rates do look very appealing. They are also much better than they used to be, I don't have a problem with them though.

Can't say I would swap the A4 or the VXR8 for one mind!
