Hey there-

My normally trusty Ram Van has no spark. I've gathered from asking / reading around that common failure items on these are 1) the ignition control module and 2) a crank sensor.

I'm guessing neither are terribly expensive, and I'd rather try to fix it myself. Anyone got any experience with these / advice you're willing to share?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone? C'mon guys... someone on here's gotta be a better mechanic than me and is willing to share some knowledge.

TIA-

How much would you be for a new ICM or crank sensor?

If they are cheap it might be worth replacing them and seeing if that makes any difference, if not then you know the problem is elsewhere.

Have you checked all your fuses?

Thanks DBR9. That's where i was going with this. I think each of those are only about $40 to $50, and not too tough to replace. I'm just not sure where to start, though. Maybe I'll just flip a coin, pick one, and if that doesn't work, do the other. And then if that doesn't work, I think I'm gonna have to give up and....gulp... take it into a mechanic.

If no one else has any ideas, that sounds like as good a place as any to start.

Thanks for the reply- TD

What year is your truck? A crank sensor should throw codes, so you could get the info from an OBDII reader. Depending on year, it may also have a cam position sensor that can cause that issue. But that will throw codes, too.

it's a '97 Ram Van. I don't have a reader, though.

Most auto shops will give you a read for free, but that doesn't help you much...

So here's an update... and another problem.
Finally gave up on fixing it myself and took it to my local shop.

$600 and a crank position sensor later, it's up and running again.

It's been running fine, and now i have a check engine light on and the computer's giving me a code of 54? (Yes i did learn how to get the
codes since i last posted.)

Any help on what the code means?

Thanks in advance.

Awesome, thanks! Maybe I'm reading the code wrong, though. That link says a code of 54 has something to do with the turbo, which this van doesn't have. Damn, that would be sweet, though... a turbo Ram Van.

I'm going to go recheck - maybe I read it wrong.

Thanks again! That's great info.
