Well, hopefully I don't stir up any brand loyalty fights here!. but simply put, I'm for sure trying to sell my daily driver this time so I can buy a truck.

I have a project car that I'm working on to eventually turn into my nice ride/good weather car, so I'm just looking for a cheap, reliable older truck to use as a main daily driver/use to move belongings around (larger/heavier things mainly, so a truck would be nice to have). It doesn't have to be new and perfect, just dependable. Looking to spend $2500-$4K USD or so.

I'm just curious which of the 3 main domestic options would be my best bet? Mainly looking for the most daily driver friendly option (reliability, comfort, fuel mileage). I want a 5 speed if that matters. Something easier to work on is a big plus. The heaviest stuff I can see myself using the truck to move is furniture, or an engine (for the project, eventually), so I'm eyeballing a V6.

Mainly considering the Ranger, but looking to hear other's experience/informed opinions. Thanks in advance!

You could probably find a good mid-2000s ranger for that budget.

Hello,
I only ever had rangers with V6 4WD and they held up very good (as far as my small trucks were concerned). I never had any chevys, gmc, dodge, nissans and toyotas but knew other people that did and from what I can tell you Toyota Tacomas’ are by far the most reliable, I know guys who still have their same trucks for over 15 years, beat the heck out of them and never had any problems.

Like I said my Ford Rangers held up pretty good for me as well however.

cheers!!

Over the years I have owned a ranger and a dakota. The Dakota was a little bit better quality then the ranger, but the ranger is a better value considering from what I have seen they are some what affordable.

id have to go with the dakota on this one. the quality is much better, and you can find a decent deal if you shop around. pay attn to the year and the type of engine thats in it, that can make a big difference. but i think in general the v6 will be a good option for you since you'll get better gas mileage. let us know when you decide.

I have never owned a Ranger, but I did have a Dakota for a while. I really liked the truck, had a lot of room for a smaller midsized truck and great pickup. However that was a long time ago, I am sure things have changed.

Rangers seem to hold up better overall, but the S-10 is a decent truck if you find a good V6 version in your price range. A bit more aftermarket support for the Chevy than for the Ford, but it's still good for both.

Personally, if you're leaving it stock, I'd go with a Ranger, as I've had good luck with them, as have friends.
