Why don't you guys in the states have cars like this? Below are images of Fords 'farewell' Fiesta. Yup, it's the end of an era for Ford, and I'm sure many a boy racer and Grandad alike will miss the little Fiesta. As a farewell treat, while most manufacturers give away longer warranties and extra kit, Ford is upping the already more than sufficient power output of the ST to 185-bhp!

We don't have them cause they are ugly and a GTi can outrun them. In my book, if a GTi can outrun it, its not worth driving.

What GTI? There's alot of GTi badged cars out there.....VW's Golf GTI is in a different class for a start, so should not be a competition!

If it's not far off, shouldn't it be worthy of your presence? ;)

Let me try to explain this Cliffy.

Most Americans live 40 miles from where they work. In America we have land, lots of land. There are places in the US where you can drive for 2 hours and never see a building. That goes for Canada and OZ.
Our alleyways are wider than many of your main streets.

The average American spends 1.5 hours driving 80mph every day. That is 175kph for the math challenged.

Small cars don't hold up to that abuse. They are not comfortable when you spend long hours in them. We spend an average of 14 hours a week in our cars.

We sell small cars to people who live 5 miles from work. You see them in cities, but on the highways it's big iron or those autobahn type cars.

I drove to Texas last weekend, 117 miles. The trip took 1hour and 18 minutes and I stopped for burgers. I just kept pace with the traffic flow. That is an average speed of 90mph.

It's fun when you are in a small car and two or three of those 88,000 pound trucks blow by you at 80mph.

Now me, I like small but here in the US, I am considered . . . well, different.

Im sorry, but small cars are much better than you seem to be making them out to be. Like you say, lets say someone lives 1.5 hrs from their work. They buy, say a Ford Fiesta ST. It is fast, looks good, has plenty of space in the front (I am 6"2, so trust me!) and a decent boot for any luggage they may need. Also there is plenty room for a passenger to sit comfortably, and enough room in the back for the occasional passenger. They then arrive at work and find they have averaged 40+ mpg! This means they have spent a small amount on the car, and even less on petrol. Whats the problem?

Not a problem. I just tried to explain, Americans love big giant heavy cars. Has nothing to do with good/bad car.
It has everything to do with getting to the next light in 8 seconds, and being able to pass the car in front.

You drive a small car 100 miles every day, for six months and come back and tell us how wonderful it is. Don't just drive around town and try to sing its praises. When you are young your body can handle more stress.

I know many people who tried small cars. They went back to BIG cars rather quickly, even though they saved on gas.

When they make a small car with 5oohp, we buy them!!!

We love to complain about $3 gas but it doesn't stop us from buying BIG cars.

My wife bought a new car Sat, She drives 55 miles both ways, to and from work. She went to KIA and drove a REO, because of the gas mileage. She came home with a 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500. She just loves pickups. She likes to be high up. When it came right down to it gas didn't mean a thing.

Hell, I know people who pay $5 a gal for bottled water.

Me, I drive a 300 hp Miata. I would not give it up for anything. But I am thinking about sticking an LS1 in it.

Sorry I was in a bit of a bad mood when I posted that! I think that small cars are ideal for driving to and from work, but not as your permanent car. Everyone needs a big thirsty car for the weekend! I would buy a smaller car for during the week, as small cars over here are actually surprisingly good, and a RS4 or something for the weekends. Sadly I can't afford that, but the new A4 should do both rather well ;)

That was classic. Welldone, lol. Caboose, I see where you're coming from, but as has been said, small cars aren't at all what they used to be. Yes, some smaller cars wear worse than others, but on the whole, a new small car is just as comfy as a larger car! Also, with small cars these days, power-weight ratios etc mean that overtaking other vehicles isn't an issue. If fuel was cheaper (well, the cost of running a big car full stop really) I'd buy big cars all the time, just because overall I prefer the space in the boot, and I like the standard creature comforts that you might not get in smaller cars.
